There are times in the bible when it seems to be saying something clearly… and yet with some cultural context, we see that the situation is a great deal murkier and the actual message is slightly different.

For instance, the topic of this Sunday’s sermon (you can find the full text of the readings here), is Jesus’ teaching on Divorce. It seems on the surface like Jesus is saying, ‘divorce is inherently a bad idea, and you’re wrong to do it’, when in fact culturally speaking, Jesus’ message seemed to be, ‘you treat women like kleenex, please stop, they’re not meant to be disposable.’
